Ganjin, a high priest in the Tang Dynasty China, finally arrived in Japan in 753 after he went through many hardships, even he lost his eyesight. He is also known for the founder of Toshodaiji Temple.
Ganjin was invited to Japan by two Japanese monks, Yoei and Fusho. It is said that Yoei was born in Mino region. Yoei died in the Tang dynasty while his attempt to invite Ganjin to promote the Buddhism in Japan. Although Yoei’s aspirations were passed on to Ganjin. Ganjin propagated Buddhism in Japan to grassroots level. He made a great contribution to promote Buddhism to Japan and had a great influence on Japanese culture.
This exhibition is not only to introduce the achievements of Ganjin and Yoei, but also the background of Ganjin’s visit to Japan and the Tang culture that Yoei experienced which made a great influence on mainly in Mino region both cultural and Buddhism through Japanese mission to Tang China.
